Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the practice of straightening crooked teeth. Orthodontic treatment can significantly improve the appearance of a person’s smile. This plays an important role in boosting self-confidence. Additionally, teeth that are well-aligned are easier to clean, reducing the risk of decay.

Orthodontics can fix a variety of problems including:

  • a bad bite (also known as malocclusion),
  • crooked teeth,
  • crowded teeth,
  • gaps in between teeth, and
  • lips that are positioned too far out or too far in.

Your first orthodontic appointment

At your first appointment, the dentist will go through your concerns to gain an accurate understanding of exactly what it is that you want to achieve. They will then conduct a comprehensive examination and collect data to formulate a customised treatment plan that meets your needs. Data include a digital replication of your teeth and bite, professional photos of your face and teeth, and a series of x-rays.

How are teeth straightened?

Crooked and crowded teeth can be corrected using braces or clear aligners. These appliances exert gentle forces on teeth, leading to gradual movement.

Clear aligners are popular among adults. They are less obvious in the mouth compared to metal braces and can be used to correct mild to moderate cases. Treatment involves a series of trays – each tray is worn for 2 to 4 weeks before changing over to the next tray in the sequence. They must be worn for at least 20 hours per day to be effective.

Braces are the most efficient and accurate way of correcting misaligned teeth. They are very common among children and adolescents, but are suitable for people of all ages. For children, an orthodontic assessment is recommended from the age of 9 years old.

The use of orthodontic appliances can make cleaning difficult. It is extremely important to thoroughly clean your teeth at least twice daily and to attend professional cleaning at least every 6 months.

How long will it take?

Treatment duration depends on the complexity of your case. Typically, it can range between 1 to 2 years. Book an appointment with us to start your orthodontic journey.

What happens after treatment?

Retainers are essential to ensure that your teeth do not move after orthodontic treatment. Typically, retainers must be worn full-time (except for when eating and brushing) for up to a year. After this, it is recommended that retainers are kept on during the night only.

The period of time in which retainers need to be worn depends on the individual. However, it can take several years until teeth become stable in their new position. The simple answer is as long as you want your teeth to remain straight, you should be wearing retainers. Diligent retainer wear can preserve your new smile which has taken you years to achieve.
